Owncast rarely does any social media related things, and doesn't use this account much. There's nobody to focus on such things.

We're determining if we should delete our account and stop worrying about it, completely, as it's not used much anyway, or what the alternatives are.

The fact that we're on Fosstodon, and is starting to get messages with the vibe of "you better move, or you're a nazi" isn't great.

Please, meanwhile, do not take this account as an implicit endorsement of anyone.

@owncast maybe spin up a single user instance under your own sub domain? Then all politics will be your own .. Spinning up a gotosocial instance would a good no muss. no fuss, low maintenance option if you went that route

@owncast fwiw i do get value out of the way you've run this account. i've learned about a lot of fedi-local art through your reposts.

whatever happens, thank you for enabling them and surfacing their creations :)

@owncast what would it take for owncast to be able to have microblogging features, e.g.

- a textarea with a post button, like mastodon
- host a public bio with posts of varying degrees of visibility
- able to do the same federation of following and displaying a paginated feed

@tychi It would be an immense amount of work to build that, and going forward that would be all I’d have time for. Building a microblogging service is its own full time thing. You can already send posts, but that’s it. https://github.com/owncast/owncast/issues/1952#issuecomment-2819687099

@sam That’s the real solution for sure. But adding yet another thing to worry about isn’t in the cards. Especially for how little we use it.

That's the mastoverse for you

@owncast i agree that features for a social platform can become limitless-- is the work effort heavier in any given phase: research -> design -> front-end -> back-end -> reliability?

if it'd be possible just to have an API, i have half-baked social html components, with things like intersection observer to lazy load more posts, i've been meaning to implement against a service.

i have other components that do tree based rendering for nesting (filesystems) that can be applied to replies (threads)

put another way, i think it'd be okay if something was api only and didn't need to have an admin interface designed for it, but also respect api design and architecture are a lot of work under the hood in their own right

@tychi By API I assume you mean the Mastodon API. That’s a lot to reimplement to be Mastodon client compatible.

@owncast I wonder what is the context of this message and what "you better move" mean. I see your account is active and you are followed by 5000 people, so certainly continue to have an account.

@rdis It’s certainly active today! But in general it’s not posting anything.

@owncast i don't have any mastodon specific code written, or activity pub in general

the components i'd be forking are

1. my email jmap integration
2. a custom slack/discord like clone that i have connected to supabase/postgres

those just have code for doing infinite scrolling and client-side logic for escaping html/emails and markdown/posts

i don't have any mastodon client that i use either, i just post and read in the web interface-- i don't need most of mastodon's api or ui

@tychi If Owncast only had a microblogging API and not UI, it would need to be Mastodon client compatible. It’s just not what Owncast is built for. So many people don’t even use the Fediverse features, so dedicating myself to them isn’t going to work. We will continue to add features that make sense, but building a microblogging platform can’t be one of them.

@owncast you can always move here, floss.social is nice.

Also if you want a volunteer social media person to deal with this and look after the mastodon community, you probably just need to ask around (I'd be happy to help for example)

@etc We don't have a blog for any content such as that. But there is a newsletter that comes out every month or two. https://owncast.online/newsletter/

@owncast This was my only known way to follow the project, and it's what I check most often. I guess if I can follow another account via the fediverse that would be fine...

@owncast Please keep an Owncast presence that allows you to make announcements as needed. No need to entertain us..that is what Owncast is for. 😊

Just use it when needed. Appreciated!
